Artificial Intelligence and Puerto Rico: A Strategic Hub in the Caribbean

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Polytechnic University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, we proudly reflect on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on our discipline and society. For five decades, our institution has witnessed technological and scientific advances that now empower us to face complex challenges and improve our daily lives. Artificial intelligence, as a key discipline in modern engineering, has revolutionized industries, from medicine to automotive technology, and continues to be a keystone of innovation. This anniversary not only prompts us to celebrate our past achievements, but also to look forward to a future full of possibilities, where AI continues to be an engine of change and progress for our students and alumni.

In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries at an unprecedented speed, Puerto Rico has the opportunity to establish itself as a strategic hub in the Caribbean, serving as a bridge between the United States, Latin America, and the world. Our geographical location, homegrown talent, and relationship with the U.S. markets place us in a unique position to leverage the potential of AI in key sectors, such as healthcare, manufacturing, cybersecurity, and education.

Puerto Rico has already undertaken initiatives reflecting the growth of AI in the island. Biotech and pharmaceutical companies are exploring the use of AI to optimize processes and develop new treatments. In the cybersecurity sector, AI plays a crucial role in real-time threat detection, strengthening the country’s technological infrastructure. Education also plays a role: universities and research centers, such as the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, are integrating AI courses and projects, training a new generation of highly qualified specialists.

Nevertheless, the challenges are significant. The loss of talent, limited access to advanced technological infrastructure, and the shortage of investment in R&D can slow down the growth of this ecosystem. To become a true center of AI innovation, we must reinforce the alliances between academia, the industry, and the governmental sector. In addition, the implementation of AI must consider ethical and social issues. Transparency in the algorithms, data protection, and an equitable access to technology must be prioritized.

From an economic perspective, the development of AI in Puerto Rico can generate high-value jobs, attract foreign investment, and strengthen key sectors, such as commerce, logistics, and industrial automation. To achieve this, we must foster an ecosystem that promotes research, innovation, and business development.

Puerto Rico has the potential to be an AI benchmark for the Caribbean, Latin America, and the world. The key is to leverage our strategic position, retain talent, and foster a sustainable technology ecosystem. The time to act is now.

Let’s keep promoting the technological future of the island!
