Our program was created in 1980 to contribute to the economic and social development of Puerto Rico. A graduate of the industrial engineering career applies his/her skills and knowledge to increase operational efficiency in any type of business (healthcare, manufacturing, distribution / logistics and services of all kinds), reduce costs, and innovate work systems, as well as reduce the impact that work systems could have on the environment.
We are committed to offering each of our students an education that prepares them to be an innovative professional, problem-solving oriented, ethical, and committed to continuing their learning. Our students participate in research as well as student activities through student organizations such as IISE (Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering), ASQ (American Society of Quality), national and international conferences, among others that help them develop their skills in leadership and entrepreneurship.
In the ISE Department, we use the project-based learning approach to help our students gain experiences from the beginning of their second-year courses. The course projects are carried out in the multiple manufacturing and service industries in Puerto Rico. With these experiences and the acquired knowledge, they will be prepared to obtain COOP, internships, or paid jobs in a company, as well as create their own business.
Our faculty has vast experience in the field of industrial engineering thanks to their years of service as engineers and consultants. These experiences are transferred to the classroom to create a meaningful learning environment for the student. In addition, they guide our students in their career development so that they can continue to grow professionally before and after graduation.
In these last 10 years more than 90% of our students completed at least two internships before graduating, an achievement that allows them to have a job offer upon graduation. Our graduates are working in and outside of Puerto Rico in leadership positions in companies such as Yeti, Samsung, AMGEN, Medtronic, Federal Express, Johnson & Johnson, Hubbell, Mylan, PepsiCo, Walgreens, Arthrex, Banco Popular, TransEnterix, among others.

Manufacturing and service companies in both the private and public sectors seek Industrial Engineering graduates for their skills and competencies. In addition to the manufacturing industries such as pharmaceutical, electronics, medical devices and assembly-processes companies, which traditionally hire IE´s; other employers of our graduates include banks, hospitals, logistics-distribution firms, retailers, and consulting firms. Practicing industrial engineers serve as transition and integration consultants as well as developers and system architects in the design for productivity and usability of products and services. Industrial engineers, in senior positions, are sought as strategic planners and integrators because of their grasp of comprehensive and complex systems.
IE´s lead and manage engineering, manufacturing, service delivery, research and entrepreneurial firms, always searching for and fostering continuous change and improvement. In short, IE´s are called upon to help assure profits, total quality control, cost effectiveness, timeliness, and satisfactory results for customers and strategic impact through continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.
Industrial Engineers are particularly sensitive to promoting human values of health, safety and satisfaction. The typical career path is an entry-level engineering or line supervision position that progresses to a management position in the firm or institution. Often, Industrial engineers ultimately become chief executive officers of their organizations.
Programa Especial para Estudiantes de Escuela Superior
The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department has a very active student chapter: IIE Student Chapter #926. The IIE Student Chapter at Poly offers students experiences and opportunities to develop leadership skills. Through its Board of Directors, students prepare a comprehensive Annual Program of Activities which includes professional development activities, networking activities, social and recreational activities.
Among the professional development activities, students have a chance to attend Plant Tours held at service and manufacturing sites. Students also have an opportunity to attend technical workshops and seminars offered by IE professionals throughout the year. Further, the IIE Student Chapter organize networking events where students have a chance to meet with potential future employers. These activities are coordinated through the Colegio de Ingenieros y Agrimensores de Puerto Rico, or through the Annual IIE Conference organizers.
Our students also have a chance to meet with their professors outside the classroom, and with IE professionals and students from other institutions through social and recreational events. These events include a beach volley-ball tournament, el Mega Junte Industrial, and social responsibility activities, among other activities.
Industrial Engineering Senior Design Projects are probably the most important courses of our programs. In these courses, the students apply the engineering concepts learned through their years in their undergraduate curriculums. They work in teams to complete the design of a project that correlates all the major areas of their corresponding degree program.
There are three (3) full time Industrial Engineering professors that help IE’s students with their developmental educational path. They provide mentoring assistance to all students who have approved 72 credit- hours or more. The major mentoring tasks include:
This component of advising provides a more general exposure to the profession and to future academic opportunities to all students. The students have the opportunity to discuss specific technical elective courses, graduate school options, employment possibilities, and other professional issues with faculty members.
Cases that require special attention, mainly those involving transfer students, are referred to the Department Head or the Student Affairs Director Assistant. Transfer students academic records are evaluated in a case by case basis to insure full equivalency to the IE program curriculum.

Industrial Engineering adopts as its goals: profitability, effectiveness, efficiency, adaptability, responsiveness, quality, systems integration and the continuous improvement of products and services throughout their life cycles. The humanities and social sciences, computer sciences, basic sciences, management sciences, along with physical, behavioral, mathematical, statistical, organizational and ethical concepts will be used to achieve these ends.
The curriculum of this Associate Degree is designed to prepare a Logistics Technician with the planning, implementation and administration skills to work with supply chain integrated systems. These systems will ensure an efficient delivery and a reliable and sustainable implementation that will minimize the costs of logistics operations to distribute finished products, supply materials and manage rejected materials.
The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department offers students hands-on experiences in both academic laboratories as well as in industrial environments where students practice concepts and techniques learned in the classroom. A 43% of our IE courses requires real life projects in a variety companies from the manufacturing and services industries, exposing the students to a professional environment before completing the degree. In addition, IE laboratory facilities have been designed to cover major areas of the Industrial Engineering current practice, where students acquire current knowledge and expertise that the industry demands. This endeavor is developed through a significant investment of over $0.5 million in state-of-the-art technology, both equipment and software-hardware support.
This classroom was re-designed to foster a collaborative and team-work atmosphere where students can sit around different tables as well as enjoy the projection on the current class directly in individual monitors setup for each table. The room is currently dedicated for the job design-related courses and laboratory experience where students are taught key competencies for workstation design, standard development and capacity analysis. It is also equipped with an intelligent podium allowing for video conference presentations, a sound system, and microphones systems. Courses can be recorded and posted in Blackboard platform. It can accommodate up to 35 students.
This room is also equipped with a small recording room, where faculty and students alike can develop audiovisual materials to improve their course and assignment contents. Individual presentations recording are done to the students to improve their presentation skills. A personal brand expert will provide an evaluation and mentoring for each student.
This room will also be used for the Innovation and Value Proposition Design Laboratory. This laboratory is developed to increase the entrepreneurial mind set by the used of innovation tools in order to assess and organize customer’s needs and expectations and to better translate this information with specific methods toward customer value creation and corresponding business innovative solutions.
This engineering classroom has a capacity of 28 students. This laboratory was created to provide the students with the opportunity to carry out practical experiments concerning anthropometry, noise and illumination, work-station design, manual material handling, biomechanics and other areas of human performance evaluation and machine-human interactions for the workstation design and human-workplace integration and process improvement.
The laboratory also includes adjustable workstations, ergonomic equipment, sound level meters, light meters, goniometers, and push/pull gauges.
A new addition to this laboratory is a layout design for the healthcare industry, particularly an emergency room setting simulating a station for vitals and a station for patient recovery. This simulated environment allows particular discussions for the quality and process improvement topics with specific real-life settings.
This classroom was designed for a capacity of up to 33 students. This room also have several workstations to simulate an assembly-type environment where students can develop and test ideas using different challenges presented throughout some industrial and systems engineering courses. This laboratory assembly line will use educational racing car models to perform all the Lean six sigma techniques. As part of the offering of the Lean Six Sigma courses for graduate and undergraduate programs, this laboratory provides the student the professional expertise of applying most of the techniques used in a DMAIC project. The student will be able to apply techniques and concepts such as FMEA, SIPOC, PROJECT CHARTER, VOC, LEAN MANUFACTURING, STATISTICS, DOE, INVENTORY MANAGEMENT, PRODUCTION CONTROL, PRODUCTIVITY, COST ACCOUNTING, TOTAL QUALITY CONTROL, SPC, industrial SAFETY, JOB DESIGN, and others within a simulated manufacturing environment. This laboratory was developed under the Body of Knowledge requirements for a CIAPR Black Belt Certification.
This laboratory will also be used to perform the process automation experience. Laboratory experiences in automation and robotics using electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems. The laboratory practices include the selection and implementation of sensors and actuators along with Programmable Logic Controllers and Microprocessor Systems.
This classroom is designed for 30 students. The Operations Management Laboratory consists of Windows 10 (Office 365) network with thirty (30) Optiplex 8020 personal computers for the student’s usage and particular computer-based courses within the ISE curricula. It is based on an open-access environment where students are given the opportunity to work on assignments and work on after-class jobs at their own pace with key industrial engineering software and tools. This laboratory offers the students the opportunity to access specialized software to tackle industrial engineering problems using state-of-the-art technologies.
The Software Instruction Laboratory has a capacity for twenty-four (24) students. This lab consists of a Windows 10 network with twenty-four (24) Thin Client Computer (Wise 3040) for student usage. It is based on specific class needs and assignments, where student are requested to manage critical applications and on-class work. This laboratory has the equipment and software required to develop the system analysis, solutions development and decision-making skills of the students as mentioned above. The Laboratory also has a system of four (4) LCD 32 inches TV’s, one projector and a simplified podium station.
This room has a capacity of thirty-two (36) seats. This classroom was planned as smart room to provide special presentations and courses. It is equipped with a video-conference system with comprehensive audiovisual capabilities. Courses can be recorded and posted in the online platform.
MLT Seminar | Interview and Analytical | October 13, 2019 Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
The industrial engineering students Esteban Noel Lebrón and Issac Santiago attended the Interview and Analytical seminar of MLT in the city of Minneapolis. In the seminar they learned skills that will help them to manage effectively in their job interviews. During their stay, the students shared with various representatives of multiple companies and had the opportunity to interview for internships and employment opportunities. In the case of Esteban, he was interviewed by 6 companies and Isaac with three companies. Thanks to MLT (https://ml4t.org/blog/mlt-helping-minority-students-succeed-tech/) both Esteban and Isaac had access to these opportunities.

On November 7, 2019, the Annual Conference of the American Society of Quality Puerto Rico Section 1500 was held. PUPR-ISE Students learned about issues related to the impact of industry 4.0 on quality processes and data management. The students were accompanied by Professor Maria M Garcia Sandoval.

in this course the student is exposed, from early in their career, to real situations faced by an industrial engineer. Johnson & Johnson Engineering Showcase 2019 | Vivo Beach Club, Puerto Rico
On Wednesday, October 16, 2019 nine students of the industrial engineering program attended the Johnson & Johnson Engineering Showcase held at Vivo Beach Club in Isla Verde. During the exhibition, the students presented their course projects and interacted with the company’s executives from Puerto Rico, the United States and Latin America. Two of the exhibited projects corresponded to the IE 2220 Statistics for Engineers course, one of the IE 3222 Statistical Quality Control, another of the IE 3500 Service Engineering and one of IE 4915 Facilities Planning and Design project. This activity served to expose them to other audiences to strengthen their communication skills. As well as communicate the results of their research projects to society.
The students who attended were: Rossivel Aquino, Angelica Moreno, Kelly Alzate, Christian Correa, Eddie Desueza, Davis Andino, Alejandro Ortiz, Grace Fontánez, and Wilfredo González.
Statistics and Quality Control Real-Life Project
In these courses the student is exposed, from early in his career, to real situations faced by an industrial engineer. The student starts with the engineering design process with the analysis of a business process and data experimentation. It also develops project management skills, teamwork and effective communication.
In this course, students use the ethnographic method to identify the needs of customers in a service business. This method is widely used in social sciences to identify culture in groups of people. In our program we are using it to observe in depth the behavior and experience of customers. In this way the industrial engineer can identify unmet needs in the clients. As well as opportunities for service improvements and delight the customer.

Students Earn Awards for Their Research at the CLEIN 2019 | Oct 27th-Nov 1st 2019, Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Los Estudiantes de Ingeniería Industrial Gonzalo Figueroa y Kiandra Rivera obtuvieron el tercer lugar con su ponencia profesional en la Congreso Latinoamericano de Estudiantes de Ingeniería Industrial y Afines (CLEIN) celebrado del 27 de octubre al 1er de noviembre 2019 en Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala. La ponencia presentada fue Mejoramiento de la Capacidad y Producción en una Fábrica de Ensamblaje de Ventanas a través del Despliegue de Facilidades. Este proyecto fue realizado como parte de los requisitos del curso IE 4915 Facilities Planning And Design Project dirigido por el Profesor Luis Olivares.
Por otra parte, el estudiante Gonzalo Figueroa obtuvo el segundo lugar con la presentación del poster de investigación titulado Las Prácticas de Mejoramiento Continuo en la Industria de Servicio de Puerto Rico a través de Métodos Mixtos. Este proyecto de investigación fue realizado gracias a la iniciativa del Programa de Investigación Subgraduada para Estudiantes de Honor (URP-HS) bajo la supervisión de su mentora Dra. María M García Sandoval.
Ambos trabajos premiados serán publicados en la revista científica online Latino-Americana de Inovação e Engenharia de Produção de Brazil, https://revistas.ufpr.br/relainep/.
4th North American IEOM Conference | Undergraduate Poster Competition
Toronto, Canada, October 23-25, 2019
Las estudiantes del Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y Sistemas Natali Camacho y Aisha Torres ganaron el primer y segundo lugar en la competencia de poster de investigación subgraduada de la IEOM celebrada en Toronto, Canadá del 23-25 de octubre 2019. Natali presentó su proyecto de investigación The 2017-2018 Evaluation of the Operational Excellence Index Impact over the Private Sector Sustainability in Puerto Rico realizado bajo la supervisión del Dr. José Alberto Morales y en colaboración con el programa de investigación subgraduado para estudiantes de honor de Titulo V STEM de la Universidad. Por otro lado, Aisha presentó su proyecto de investigación Statistical Analysis of the Drying Process at a Car Wash realizado en el curso IE 3222 y en colaboración con los estudiantes Kevin Diaz y Nicole Rangel bajo la supervisión de la Dra. Maria Garcia Sandoval.
En esta competencia nuestras estudiantes compitieron con más de 50 posters procedentes de universidades de Estados Unidos, Canadá, Alemania, México, India, Brazil, Colombia entre otros. La conferencia de IEOM se celebra cada año por regiones geográfica (http://ieomsociety.org/ieom/conferences/) y su misión es promover globalmente el pensamiento crítico y su efectiva utilización en los campos de la ingeniería industrial y gerencia de operaciones.
Capstone Project Won Gold @ PRMA QUEST 2019 | Ponce, Puerto Rico
Los egresados John Henry (2019), Willie de la Rosa (2019) y Cesar Avelino (2019) ganaron oro representando a la Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico en laCompetencia Anual del Quest 2019 que organiza la Asociación de Industriales de Puerto Rico. Esta actividad se llevó a cabo el 24 de octubre de 2019 en el Centro Ferial de Ponce. Ellos expusieron el proyecto capstoneImproving E2E PLT of Two High Runner Components realizado en la empresa Boston Scientific de Dorado. Esta actividad es un medio para que nuestros estudiantes en capstone expongan sus proyectos de fin de carrera y reciban retroalimentación de los profesionales experto en la industria a la misma vez que compiten.
QUEST University 2019 | Asociación de Industriales de Puerto Rico
El pasado 1er de junio del 2019 se celebró la Convención de la Asociación de Industriales de Puerto Rico en el Hotel Westin Rio Mar en Rio Grande. En el mismo el programa QUEST Universitario celebró por primera vez la competencia de poster de trabajos universitarios. En esta competencia se reconoció la calidad de los trabajos de los 6 proyectos exhibidos y realizados por estudiantes del programa de Ingeniería Industrial y Sistemas de la Universidad Politécnica. El programa QUEST Universitario, por medio de jueces asignados y rúbrica, evaluó cada uno de los posters. Este proceso de evaluación es uno interactivo con preguntas al estudiante y observación al poster. La rúbrica usada tiene como marco la metodología de solución de problemas DMAIC. Esto es, define, measure, analyze y control. Los resultados obtenidos fueron 4 proyectos del nivel plata y 2 proyectos del nivel bronce. 5 de estos proyectos fueron realizados en cursos de segundo año del currículo y uno en el curso Capstone II. Esto demuestra el enfoque profesional y practico de nuestro currículo. Entre los beneficios que obtienen nuestros estudiantes en el desarrollo de estos proyectos son: desarrollo de las destrezas de comunicación oral y escrita, pensamiento crítico, solución de problemas, destrezas de relaciones interpersonales, autonomía, liderazgo y destrezas de manejo del tiempo, creatividad, motivación para dar el máximo entre otros beneficios personales y académicos.
